OBA Update - November 7, 1999

SUMMARY:  Lots of new members, Email Buddy program, post-BF action message coming soon.

Hi folks,

I know it has been awhile since you have gotten an update. Personally, I am still digging out from under Bronco Fest. It was only a three day event, but it has generated almost as much work post Fest as preparing for it. So, I need to clear up a few administrative items.

We have had a number of new members join OBA in the last few weeks. So please welcome aboard the following individuals. I don't have all the information on everyone so please excuse the brevity.

Knox Bishop,, is a retired Air Force Col. and presently the Curator for Frontiers of Flight Museum at Dallas Love Field. Knox has been instrumental in guiding OBA in the process of assembling a museum and is an avid supporter. He joins us as an Affiliate member.

Joe Copalman,, is a student at Arizona State University and our first student member. In exchange for membership, Joe will be doing some research work for us.

John "Crazy" Dowell,, is a former Aerial Observer with VMO-2 from back in the '70's. He still lives in Oceanside, California. "Crazy" is also one of three new LIFERS.

John "Gibber" Gibbs,, is a former member of the Air Force's 23rd TASS. He makes his home in Cedar Point, Texas and has enlisted for three years.

Ed "Bucki 01" Gillespie,, was the chief test pilot of the OV-10 for North American Aviation. He lives in Gahanna, Ohio and is also a new LIFER.

Tom "Nail 14" Kemp,, is a former member of the 23rd TASS. He is also a Past President of the Air Force Association here in Texas and is helping us in the capacity of political liaison with the OBA.

Gary Koss,, is a former member of VMO-2 and lives in New Braunfels, Texas. When we recently mentioned we were pushing to reach 100 members by year end, Gary jumped right in. I appreciate his enthusiasm and ready support.

Angela Bennett,, is the daughter of Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Steve "Covey 87" Bennett. She was introduced to us my Steve's backseater Mike Brown. Angela is an Honorary Lifer.

Ken "Issue 28" Semmler,, is our newest member from downunder. Ken was a former ANZUS Fac with the Royal Australian Air Force as a member of the Air Force's 19th TASS. Ken is our third member living in Australia.

Bruce Vath is a former member of VMO-2 and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Bill "Blaster" White,, is yet another former member of VMO-2. He lives in McKinney, Texas, so we hope to see more of "Blaster" and find out where his callsign came from.

Mike "Wolfman 45" Brown, has the distinction of being our 100th member and joined during Bronco Fest. He is a former member of 1st Anglico and was Steve Bennett's backseater. We are honored to have him as a member and thank Mike McCollum for introducing him to us. Mike lives in Richardson, Texas.

Ray "Rash 41/Nail 28" Janes stumbled across us during our visit to the Alliance Airshow during Bronco Fest. Ray joined immediately for a three year enlistment. Ray lives in Denton, Texas.

Doug Johnson,, is a former Army Cobra driver and now a pilot with American Airlines. He has just joined within the past week and lives in Bedford, Texas.

James Jacobs, I don't have any info on James yet, but wanted to include him now.

Daniel Conrad,, is a former Black Pony with VAL-4. He was based in Binh Thuy and Vung Tau, RVN from '69 to '70. Daniel is also our most recent LIFER.

Please welcome these gentlemen and lady to our growing group of 104 members. Welcome Aboard!

There were many conversation on many topics during Bronco Fest, and one good idea that came up involved our email challenged members. We have 13 members who do not have email addresses. As you are probably aware, most of our business is conducted on the net. Unfortunately these 13 folks are missing out on an enormous amount of information and news. One of our members, Warren McGowan, had an idea: The Email Buddy Program. It is really simple, but needs the assistance of some of you.

Here's how it works. Some one volunteers to be an email challenged member's Buddy and send them hard copies of our emails periodically. That amount of detail is escaping me, and it would be a great help to them and me to keep everyone up-to-date on the latest information and discussions. Just pick a name from the following list, and let me know that you wish to be that person's "Email Buddy." I will see that you get their address and phone number and then you can keep them up to date. Please contact me directly at If possible we'll match you up with someone relatively close to you, tell us if this is a concern. Thanks in advance, it is a little thing, but it will mean a lot.

Re-enlistments: We haven't forgotten, just been too busy getting ready for Bronco Fest and cleaning up. I will be sending out notices soon for re-enlistments. We have also extended the discount on LIFER memberships to the end of the year.

The next update should include the Bronco Fest after action report. In case you haven't seen it yet, Merlin has done a terrific job of posting pictures and his journal at, showing one more reason he was awarded Bronco Buster of the Year.

Thanks again for your support, it is making a difference.

Best regards,
