OBA Update - October 7, 1998
SUMMARY: Maintenance issues, tech reps visit
This is a general OV-10 Bronco Association update for members and interested parties both.
This week, on the first [Oct. 1, 1998], we held our first Maintenance Planning Meeting. Some of the topics covered included: Aircraft Move. We are planning to move "799" from Hicks Field to the "Corral" at Meacham Field Nov. 7th. This will all be contingent on the hangar insulating being completed by then. We are going to need a semi of 40' or so, so if you're in the Metroplex and know of one let us know.
Next week on the 14th, we are planning for the arrival of two legendary OV-10 Tech Reps, Jack Ballard and Ira Hughes. Both were with the airplane for years and Jack is still an active consultant. Chuck "Igor" Burin plans to attend and lend his historical expertise to the Restoration Plan and aircraft evaluation. Charlie Yates is planning to document the visit for a future video project. In very general terms, we expect the historical restoration, to full flying condition to cost about $500,000.00. We are planning to have the restoration completed by March of 2002. Now we just have to figure out how to finance the project. If anyone is around DFW next week, get in touch and join in the mini reunion.
Mike [Richardson] informed us recently that we may need to make room for a second airframe. No particulars, but a "parts bird" may be in our future.
Vince Sapero, former Marine OV-10 mech., has been named Maintenance Chief for the restoration project. As you may or may not know, when Vince heard about the Association and our plans he immediately transferred from his job with AAL in Tulsa and moved here to work with us. We are delighted to have him on staff.
This coming weekend, the Air Force FAC Association is holding a reunion in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Three of our members, Darrel Whitcomb (NAIL), Bill Sleigh (RUSTIC) and Charlie Yates (COVEY) will attend to represent us and promote the Association. We appreciate their time and support and wish them "good hunting."
In November we are planning a mailing to all the folks we have on our mailing list, about 1,500. We want to update the addresses as well as kick off the main thrust of our membership campaign. If you are already a member, your address is current. If you aren't a member and want to make sure you don't miss anything, send us a snail mail address. It's OK to send names and addresses of friends too.
That's about it for now. We taking new members on almost a daily basis. The support is satifying. If you haven't had a chance, check out the new Association Forum chat room and message board at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/ov10broncoassociationforum It may take a little effort to get in, but it is worth it.
